Making negative space – oh so lovely!

I joined Jane Stafford’s Online Guild this year for the first time. I had the opportunity a few years ago to participate in a “live” workshop on Salt Spring Island – what a treat. The JST Online Guild is a wonderful reminder and continues my exploration of this wonderful world of weaving. The episode (S3,E1) started with a lovely scarf that called out to me and I picked up on the comment that dented patterning was great using small amounts of elegant threads … so with some lace weight two ply superwash merino I started:

And then like this off the loom.

The sett (I decided) was 24 epi and the grid is made up of 1″ squares. Sleying the 12 dent reed was easy – fill 12 dents with two threads each, they leave 12 dents empty – and viola! Holes. The fact that it is superwash wool probably made the threads move more into the open squares – but a cool result. It is light and snuggly and very warm. This is one to repeat … finally a warm scarf that doesn’t strangle me with too much cloth!
